2011 Honored Service Members
We proudly introduce five new SPE Honored Service Members, who are being recognized for their contributions to the Society. According to SPE Bylaws, “To be elected an Honored Service Member, a candidate shall have demonstrated long-term, outstanding service to, and support of, the Society and its objectives; shall be sponsored, in writing, by the Board of Directors of at least one Section or Division.” Only 298 members, counting these inductees, have been elected to this prestigious status since it was established in 1992. This year’s Honored Service Members are:

Earl W. Balthazar III |

Nominated by the Color & Appearance Division. Earl has worked with three Sections and one Division, accepting a variety of roles with each group, including President of one Section and Chair of the Division. He has been a newsletter editor, technical program chair, Councilor and many other positions over the years. Earl was particularly cited by the HSM Election Committee for his efforts in moving the Color & Appearance Division RETEC to a different location when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans; establishing a Student Chapter at a high school in Dallas, TX; and his involvement and activities on the Council level.

Nominated by the European Thermoforming Division. Ken was instrumental in the establishment of the SPE Europe Board – a committee of the Society that represents all the Sections, Divisions, and other member groups in Europe and the Middle East. During his term as SPE Treasurer, Ken was part of the decision making team that was able to put the finances of the Society back on an even keel. Globalization has been Ken’s main focus for years, and his visits around the world on behalf of SPE have helped the Society grow in new member groups, new conferences, and new major sponsorships and Corporate Affiliates.

Nominated by the Extrusion Division. Greg was recognized for his immersion into a variety of activities on the international level. He has served for a number of years on the Extrusion Division ANTEC Paper Review Board and was the founder of the Division’s Finance Committee. He has chaired the Society’s Bylaws & Policies Committee, where he championed the adoption of a Code of Ethics and guided the development of new governance concepts to facilitate virtual Council meetings. As Chair of the Fellows Committee, Greg developed documentation to aid process champions in submitting better, more detailed, applications on behalf of their candidates.

Nominated by the Palisades/New Jersey Section. Joe has been active with two Divisions and two Sections. While Chair of the Extrusion Division, he worked to grow ANTEC paper participation and maintain the financial strength of the Division. A board member of both the Extrusion Division and the Injection Molding Division, he was active with both groups on their technical paper review committees. His efforts in the successful merger of the Newark Section and the Palisades Section were especially noteworthy. On the Society level, Joe also served as the ANTEC 2000 Student Usher Chair.

Nominated by the Detroit Section. Irv was cited for his two careers with SPE, the first dating back to the formation of the Automotive Division in 1970, which he helped form, and then served as the first Chair. Irv brought the use of plastics in the automotive industry recognition through Division activities. He served two terms as Councilor in those early years, getting the Division involved in activities on the national level. After his retirement, he became active on the Detroit Section board, getting them involved with e-communications and helping them achieve both the Gold level Pinnacle Award and the Communications Award.
